The standard action levels which make up most of the game are punctuated by lore-heavy story sections aboard a hub ship, and some tower defense parts.. This had so much promise to it. I was highly disappointed when one of the games most known for its fast paced action had a sequel resulting in slow, lumbering combat that sapped all possible enjoyment out of it.The game could have been so much more and fell right on its face.This is one of those rare titles that desperately needs an overhaul. Someone needs to rebuild this game using a newer Unreal engine version and speed up the movements to enhance the fun of the combat. The game could still be great one day if it would just be done right.. First off, if you're trying to run this game on a Windows 10 computer, you may run into a lot of problems like I did. Funnily enough, there weren't any said problems with the older Unreal games; just specifically this one. From what I can tell, there are quite a lot of problems one may encounter when trying to run it. Most commonly start up errors, black screens or general protection faults. I personally had to download a patch, change the .ini settings and some console commands before I finally could get it to work without it crashing mid-game... so I thought. It still crashes after an hour in, so that's a major turn-off.Also, if you're a fan of the Unreal series, this one may not suit you. First up, gameplay feels slower and more sluggish compared to how Unreal normally plays out. There are quite a lot of new weapons so it'll take some getting used to, and even so, they don't feel as "fun" as the previous Pulse Guns or Ripper Cannons, etc. I don't even want to talk about the story; it's pretty bad. Again, this is from the perspective of someone who has played other games of the series.I really, really, REALLY tried to like it but I just can't bring myself to. Perhaps, I'm biased towards the faster-paced style of combat and maybe I really like some of the weapons that this version does not have. Perhaps.. Movment is painfully slow now, but added some of the coolest weapons to the series.. NOTE: I am extremly biased in my opinion. Being that this was my first game I ever played. And have a deep love for it.Why is it that every game MUST break new ground in gameplay? Solid gameplay is solid gameplay, why must devolopers "reinvent the wheel" every time they produce a game? Do we expect novelty because of the high price we pay for games? Perhaps. Or do we expect more bang for our buck from larger developers? Whatever the case, Unreal II has a fine story, the graphics are simply extraordinary, and the gameplay is certainly on par with any game deserving of a 9 out of 10. Plus, I picked up a new copy for $2.75, it's a pretty sweet game on a 6800 Ultra for that price! Think I'll quit complaining and look for some extra levels for this bad boy.. DON'T. ♥♥♥♥IN'. BUY THIS.This game is trash. Why? WELL GOSH DARN I'LL TELL YOU WHY.-Movement is sluggish and slow-Maps are TOO BIG counting how slow and sluggish you move-Weapons are not satisfying. In fact you'll be using the following weapons the most in this order: 1-Assault Rifle 2-Shotgun 3-Grenade launcher with EMP ammo 4-Sniper Rifle 5-ANYTHING ELSE WHEN YOU RUN OUT OF AMMO-The story and plot are terrible. Yeah, the story in Unreal Gold ain't great, but it works miles better than this one. Unreal 3's plot may be the plot device itself, but it works. This one, however, has SUCH poor quality that it'll make you regret playing it. I know I did.In short: if Unreal 3 is the black sheep of the saga, Unreal 2 is the♥♥♥♥♥♥that comes out of the sheep's♥♥♥♥♥The people who are recommending this game only do it because of nostalgia goggles and/or a SEVERE need to justify wasting money on this trashbag.If you get this game, better be through the Unreal Pack or else you're next in line to be declared legally insane.. Very good improvement upon original Unreal.Good plot that feel like Mass Effect.Now we have better plot instead "almost no plot" like many first 3D shooters had.Nevermind kids who are complaining about the game can't run in win10 or old coots who like storyless and fast killing they had in Unreal 1.Minuses - slow runing speed of your character, long loading times, short campaign and dead multiplayer (yes it have MP)10/10But wait for the sale. $8 for old game is too much.. Unreal 2 : A true lost gem Every time i see this game on sale , find list of top games that people put in their lists it kinda bums me out that no one mentions unreal 2 , probably because of the misleading title. Putting this info out so that anyone who reads this will try the game out and discovers a awesome hidden gem of a game. You will look back at the game in the end and wont believe 1) this was a unreal game 2) something like this existed way before the bioware games like mass effect in 2003. 1) Intro : No one expected unreal 2 to be what it was , a proper fps with rpg elements, space related story what not , if you are looking for comparisons this is the grand daddy of mass effect, anyone whos played mass effect would find instant liking and solace in this game. Heck i even bought this game expecting a sweet multiplayer experience like in unreal tournament, how far was that in this game.... 2) Story : I could sum up the story by saying its similar to mass effect but they are so many unique experiences here that the story in the game can stand up anything good you can compare with, starts off odd and falls in place perfectly till to the end.In short you start off with former Marine John Dalton and his crew who are doing the low tier patrols for something they did (avoiding spoilers) , until that fateful day they come across something, they are put in front line asap.. 3) Gameplay The gameplay is unique , the game just like mass effect has a bit of everything , classic fps , rpg like text choices, boss battle , planet jumping, space ship life, unlockable weapons . Everything alternates well so that you dont get bogged down doing the same thing , there is also some excellent tower defense style sections where you defend a objective with soldiers , deployed turrets , fences for waves. The controls are awesome unreal style in no time, you will be a master blasting through whatever the game can throw at you. 4) Graphics: The graphics is pretty awesome it holds up well even for today. i guess that's expected from unreal engine games. The various different planets and their environment plus the spaceship and its interior look great and a joy to play. 5) Music It exists apart from a few boosting tunes nothing much to remember by 6) Multiplayer : this is the sore part , when the game first shipped it barely had any multiplayer at all , it was added in later and it's just boring, Get unreal tournament 2004 if you are looking for multiplayer fun there is none here. Final Thoughts , back in the day i was blown away with how much depth the story in this game had only experienced something like this again in mass effect. A easy buy at any price .
